Family:
Costaceae (Costus)
Distribution:
Panama
Life form:
Herbaceous perennial
Description:
The Red Wine Costus is a rare and delicate species, known for its striking thick, succulent leaves that are gray-green on top and a rich red underneath. Its stems feature distinctive red "cups" stacked along their length, adding to its unique appearance. This species is more sensitive than many other Costus varieties, making it ideal as a container plant in a protected spot with regular watering. While it can be grown in the ground in well-sheltered, well-watered areas, it may be vulnerable to cold snaps in winter. Over time, it forms a stunning clump, adding beauty to any collection.
