Common name:
red-berry stopper (English)
Family:
Myrtaceae (Myrtle)
Distribution:
South Florida & West Indies
Description:
Eugenia confusa, redberry stopper. This Florida endangered species is a stately but slow-growing native that can reach heights of 40 feet. The glossy leaves have a pronounced drip tip, which helps to distinguish it from other native stoppers. Like other members of the genus, redberry stopper provides significant protection and food for wildlife and can handle a variety of light levels and soil types. All stoppers are great for pollinators and migratory birds. Found only in South Florida and the West Indies. The name "stopper" is derived from the plants medicinal use by early Florida settlers to cure diarrhea. Plant in light shade or full sun.
