Ficus squamosa
.
Family: Moraceae (Mulberry)
Distribution: China
Description: This rare and unusual fig originates from the riverbanks of tropical and subtropical Asia. Each stem grows to only 2-3 feet tall, but the plant gradually spreads by stolons, forming a colony. Its long, narrow, glossy leaves grow in opposite pairs, setting it apart from typical figs. The figs develop on the lower parts of the stems but do not ripen or produce seeds without pollination. It thrives in shaded locations with moist, well-draining soil, and has proven to be an exceptional new landscape plant at Fairchild.
