Family:

Distribution:
Tropical Central & South America
Life form:
Tree
Description:
Guiana Chestnut is a great example of a well known houseplant that attains a massive size when grown outdoors in South Florida. Native to Central and South America, it first became popular as the “money tree,” in Asia. Now grown worldwide as a houseplant, its shiny compound leaves and curiously swollen stem give small specimens the appearance of a miniature tree. When grown outdoors to maturity, it has a massive buttressed trunk, large cream colored flowers with a puff of orange stamens, and fruits that look like footballs.
