Psychotria nervosa - wild coffee
.
Common name: wild coffee (English)
Family: Rubiaceae (Madder)
Distribution: South Florida, Bahamas, Mexico, Central America, West Indies, n. South America
Life form: Shrub/sub-shrub
Description: Psychotria nervosa, wild coffee, is a common understory shrub of South Florida hammocks and a great landscape shrub. The soft, shiny leaves have unmistakable, deeply-grooved veins. Clusters of small, very fragrant white flowers attract butterflies and bright red fruit are eaten by birds. This species does well in partial sun and in shade and makes a nice hedge. It is related to true coffee, Coffea arabica, and the seeds look like little coffee beans. But we don’t recommend grinding and brewing them!
